Turning a Garage Into a Great Room

You’re probably thinking about how to get more space in your home – and if you’re like most people, the garage is one of the first places you look. (And it’s not hard to see why: garages are typically large spaces that seem perfect for adding on a room or two!) Garage Conversion Ideas are numerous, and easy to carry out. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any potential problems with converting part of your garage into living space – namely storage and functionality.

First, you’ll need to consider how much space you’re really adding on. If your home is already crowded, the last thing you want to do is make it even more cramped with a garage conversion! You should also be realistic about what kind of room can fit in there – bathrooms are typically bigger than closets and bedrooms while kitchens will likely require an entire wall (or two) dedicated to plumbing and appliances. So before you start any planning, take measurements of each potential new room so that you have a good idea of just how much space they’ll occupy when all is said and done.

Also, you’ll want to be sure that the garage conversion doesn’t negatively impact your home’s exterior. For example, if you plan on adding an egress window (which is required in most jurisdictions), make sure it won’t interfere with landscaping or other architectural features like windows and doors. You should also consider things like insulation, weatherproofing, gutters, downspouts and siding since these are likely to need upgrading anyway!

Finally, once your rooms are planned out exactly where they’ll go in relation to the rest of the house, think about storage for everything else that won’t actually be used in that space (think: tools, lawnmowers and other outdoor equipment). You’ll need some kind of storage for those things – but they don’t necessarily have to be inside the converted room.
